Initiation of establishing a world class, state-of-the-art University Library, with up-to-date, multi-faceted printed, electronic and multi-media collection, started in the month of February, 2008 with a floor space of about 1,000 sq. ft. and presently it is hosted in a multi-storeyed building with a floor space of 9000 sq.ft. The University Library has now been renamed as Teesta-Indus Library.

The Library has grown in terms of its infrastructure and facilities during the past four years. In its mission to provide the reference and research infrastructure to the academic community of the University, the library started developing its collection with the inputs from different academic communities.  On 11th Nov. 2011, a branch library was opened at the Science Block, at Tadong, which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Founding Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim University.

The Library collection strength has now grown to about 29,000 books and 507 CD/DVD across various academic disciplines. In addition to books, the Library also has a collection of 1178 Braille books. 21 national and local dailies are presently being subscribed by the Library.

During 2011-12, the Library procured 5,079 books and subscribed to 70 nationally and internationally renowned academic journals and two online databases, namely SciFinder and INDIASTAT.

Two Linux and one Windows server was installed during January 2012 for installing a library database management software. The software was installed during the early part of February, 2012 and presently running through its data entry phase. From 15th February, 2012 the Library started installing the RFID based security solutions and Self Check-in/Check-out Kiosk and completed the integration process and by mid-September 2012, 15,000 books were entered in the database and more than 10,600 books have been RFID tagged.

In collaboration with the INFLIBNET Centre, the University Library successfully conducted the 8th Convention- PLANNER: 2012 from1st to 3rd March, 2012.

    UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Library is a heart of university activities which serves as an information resource centre to support all academic functions of the University. Though the library is still in its infancy stage; hardly of 7 years old, yet it can be compared with any modern university library of the country so far as infrastructure facilities and services are concerned. The concept of modern library implies the adoption of new technologies to multiply and simplify the services to the utmost satisfaction of the users which the library has successfully achieved. It has introduced self - check out and check-in system of circulation of books, thereby making users independent so far as issue and return of books are concerned. For security purpose, it has installed CCTV covering every floor of the library.

Though library is housed in a rented building, not designed for library purpose, yet it has been made quite functional for library purpose equipped with modern furniture and other physical facilities. It caters to the information needs of over 1100 students and more than 100 faculty members, falling under the purview of 29 teaching departments. In addition to serving its own community, it also offers services to the students and faculty of all affiliated colleges of Gangtok town.

    Library Collection

Being a newly established library, it has its priority to develop core and basic collection on all teaching subjects of the university. During the short span, it has enriched most of the subjects over the years. Library has been organizing book exhibition for good participation of faculty members in selection process. During the year 2013-14, selection of books has been made in World Book Fair, New Delhi and International Book Fair Kolkata. Now the collection of books has reached over 35,000 volumes, 1178 Braille books, over 500 CD/DVD. All the books acquired in the library have been RFID tagged.

    Online Resources

To make the utmost use of the e-resources, library has the facility of WI-FI connectivity. This attracts the students to the library to make use of e-resources available under UGC Infonet (INFLIBNET).

    UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium

The UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium subscribes to the following resources for its member institutions. All electronic resources subscribed are available from the publisher's Web site. The following is the list of E-Resources available under UGC-Infonet.

This way, e-library will be developed.
